Our clients in Sudbury approached us with a strong vision: they loved their home and its location, but felt the layout was no longer serving their needs. The internal spaces lacked connection and flow, and the relationship between inside and out felt underwhelming. They were keen to create a more sociable, open-plan layout, improve the functionality upstairs, and give the whole property a fresh, contemporary identity.

What began as a relatively simple idea - a single-storey rear extension to enlarge the ground floor living area - quickly evolved into a more ambitious design. Through open discussion and creative exploration, we uncovered new possibilities, including a first-floor terrace and complete external renovation, resulting in a home that feels entirely transformed.

The Finer Details

To expand the living space on the ground floor, we introduced a generous single-storey rear extension. This created a bright, open-plan living area that flows seamlessly into a covered outdoor dining space - ideal for entertaining and making the most of the garden, whatever the weather. A key feature of the new extension is the oversized picture window with a deep-set window seat. It offers a calm and cosy place to pause and enjoy views over the garden, while acting as a striking architectural feature that anchors the design from within. The original concept developed further as we looked at the first-floor potential. We reworked the existing dormer layout to carve out space for a private en-suite to the master bedroom, creating a more luxurious and practical upstairs arrangement. From the end of the newly reconfigured hallway, we added a door leading directly onto a newly constructed first-floor terrace - offering a peaceful, elevated spot to enjoy the outdoors with added privacy. Externally, the transformation is nothing short of dramatic. The original pink render was removed and replaced with a crisp white finish that feels timeless and clean. To balance the modernisation, vertical red cedar cladding was added in key areas to introduce warmth and texture, elevating the overall aesthetic of the home while allowing it to sit naturally in its surroundings. The end result is a home that now feels cohesive, modern, and much more suited to family life. The new extension and terrace enhance the indoor-outdoor flow, while the reworked layout has brought much-needed clarity and purpose to every space. It’s a fantastic example of how thoughtful design and collaboration can breathe new life into a property, and unlock its full potential.
