Our clients in Sudbury came to us with a vision - they loved their home but felt it wasn’t quite working for them. The layout didn’t flow as well as it could, the living spaces felt disconnected, and the house lacked that seamless link to the garden. They wanted to create a more open and sociable home, introduce better functionality upstairs, and refresh the external appearance to give it a more contemporary look.

Initially, the plan was to extend the rear of the property with a single-storey extension to enlarge the living room area. However, as we explored ideas together, an exciting opportunity emerged - why stop at just the ground floor? By extending further out and adjusting the structure, we could introduce a first-floor terrace, creating a beautiful outdoor space directly accessible from upstairs.

The Final Designs

To enhance the ground floor, we designed an extended open-plan space leading out to a covered outdoor dining area, perfect for all-weather use. Upstairs, the layout was carefully reconsidered - the existing dormer area was reconfigured to introduce a private en-suite to the master bedroom. To further improve access to outdoor space, we added a new external door at the end of the first-floor hallway, leading directly onto the new terrace. One of the most striking elements of the extension is the feature picture window with a built-in window seat, providing the perfect spot to relax and enjoy views of the garden. Externally, the house received a complete makeover. The original pink render (yes, pink!) was replaced with a fresh white finish, while vertical red cedar cladding introduced warmth, contrast, and a modern aesthetic. These simple yet impactful changes gave the property a completely new identity, making it feel stylish and contemporary while blending beautifully with its surroundings. The transformation has completely changed the way this home is used and enjoyed. The new spaces feel bright, open, and connected, the garden flows seamlessly with the living areas, and the first-floor terrace adds a whole new dimension to the home. This project is a brilliant example of how, with the right vision and design, you can unlock the full potential of your home.
