We were approached by a family on the edge of Chelmsford who had a clear goal in mind: to create a kitchen-diner that felt bright, spacious and functional, while transforming the way they interacted with their outdoor spaces. Their existing kitchen felt cramped and disconnected from the garden, and with growing needs for hosting and family life, it was time for a fresh approach.

Our clients loved their home and its setting, so the focus became about enhancing what was already there—not reinventing it entirely. The brief was centred around an open-plan kitchen-diner extension, a reimagined outdoor living area, and practical upgrades to improve the flow and usability of the property.

The Finer Details

The key to the transformation lay in a modest but impactful single-storey front extension. Projecting approximately three metres forward, this addition significantly enlarged the kitchen area while retaining the character of the original bay window. The classic form was maintained but updated with expansive glazing to frame garden views and allow more natural light into the space. Internally, the new kitchen-diner features a stunning vaulted ceiling that immediately elevates the room. This addition brings height, openness and drama to the space, creating a far more contemporary and inviting environment for family gatherings and entertaining. To the rear of the property, the old conservatory was removed and replaced with a Renson-style covered outdoor dining area. This modern structure provides year-round usability and ties in seamlessly with the kitchen’s open-plan design. It enables a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor living, enhancing the family’s enjoyment of their garden throughout the seasons. A new oak-framed porch was introduced at the back of the property, mirroring the style of the existing front porch. This subtle but thoughtful addition adds balance to the home’s exterior while offering a sheltered space for day-to-day practicalities like removing shoes and coats. From top to bottom, the entire project was focused on creating flow, function and flexibility. The final result is a home that not only looks better, but works better—tailored to the needs of a busy, modern family lifestyle, with thoughtful architectural touches that enhance both the living experience and the home’s long-term value.
