As we work closely with our clients throughout the seasons, we are quite often reminded of one thing when it comes to discussing conservatories – they are simply too warm for use in the summer months, and too cold to use in the winter months.

This was one of many issues which our clients in the area of Highwoods sought to resolve for their semi-detached property – by completely removing their conservatory and reconfiguring their current kitchen space into a single storey extension, they have been able to create a space which can be used by the family all year round.

The final design has transformed their kitchen at approximately 13.5sqm, into a much larger Kitchen-Diner area at the rear of their property, effectively doubling the size of the floor space which is available to them. They wanted to ensure that the proposed space was used as efficiently as possible, and as such we took a very pragmatic approach to our designs with this project, working closely with them to bring these to an architectural standard.

The overall designs included for a multitude of aesthetic and functional features during our appointment – we proposed a new island in the kitchen, a huge 2.0m x 2.0m fixed flat roof lantern in the rooftop for light flow, a wide set of bi-folding doors which serve to connect the extension to the patio and a set of french doors to increase both air and light flow in the summer months. Externally, we detailed a parapet wall for privacy, and to compliment the adjoining flat roof and finished the structure with a combination of buff brickwork, smooth render, and vertical cedar cladding to the client’s taste. Since the build had started, the client then opted to go one step further in making this space completely bespoke to their needs – they have changed out the aforementioned french doors with a window seat that projects externally, overlooking the rear garden as a perfect place to socialise, relax and read a book. So much attention to detail has gone into this project and we are delighted to have been involved in the process, watching it unfold from a concept sketch to a final design over the previous months
